Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a science teacher in Brooklyn New York. I teach K-5. 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My school is located in the Bushwick area where children are not connected with nature. Last year we did a study of meal-worms. My students were very excited and acquired a lot of knowledge from this activity.
Last year I saw 22 classes and I couldn't buy the materials for all of them, many of the classes weren't able to have meal-worms in their classrooms so I carried them every time I met with each class; this process interfered with the observation and the recording of the students findings. This year I am requesting a butterfly pavilion to put one in each classroom.
I am requesting 22 butterfly pavilions, because I have 22 classes, so each class can have the opportunity to observe, record and report their findings. Students will have science logs to write their findings, write a short essay (according to the grade) and take pictures of the metamorphosis. This activity will enrich students' knowledge and teach them to respect living things as well as enhance their language and writing skills. Finally we will go to the school park and release the butterflies in the spring.
My students and I appreciate your support in this learning process.
Thank you.
