I teach 6th grade English Language Arts and Reading Improvement. My school is a Title One school, which basically means that the majority of my students live below the poverty line. Many of my students are English Language Learners (ELL). The highlight of their school year with me is not when we pick up a good book to read, but when we use technology. However, once I get students involved in a good book, the discussion goes on like a wild fire. My objective is for students to make a connection - preferably a text-to-self (personal) connection to the literature that they read. This can be a challenge. Many of my students, because of deficiencies in their language skills, are afraid to join in on discussions. What I have discovered is that during downtime (waiting to be let into the classroom or in the lunchroom), students actually discuss/debate ideas presented in novels. They are actually making connections to the text, when they have discussions with each other.
