The students in our program come from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and most will be first-generation college graduates. Our goal is to eliminate barriers that might deny students the opportunity to enrich their lives socially and academically. This year we have planned an educational trip to a University and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
This experience has two goals: 1) Give our students an opportunity to visit a college campus and learn about the careers they can pursue when graduating from High School 2) At the Coastal Aquarium students will learn about scientific research and the many fields where it’s used.
We live in a beautiful area, yet many of our students don’t have the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities or travel.
Our district believes ALL students should have options when graduating from high school. We want them to have the skills to succeed in a four or two-year college. The AVID program prepares them to learn the skills needed to graduate from HS and pursue a career.
Over the last couple of years, we’ve taken our 7th & 8th graders on a field trip to a four-year university and the coastal aquarium. We alternate this trip so every cohort has a chance to benefit from this enrichment opportunity. It’s a remarkable experience for these students who have so much potential. For many of them, this will be the first time at a college campus and/or the Aquarium.
Unfortunately, this year looks like it might not be possible due to cost. We don’t want to deny our students of such a quality educational opportunity, therefore we are hoping to receive this grant. Your support will foster excellence, for every student, every day.
