This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine walking into school on the first day and seeing your former teacher at the door. You may feel lost, confused, or (hopefully) excited. This will be a reality for my class this year. I am moving up to second grade with my former first graders and am planning this project based on their needs.
My students live, learn, and play in a neighborhood of Detroit's east side.
Most students live within walking distance of the school, where they receive free breakfast every morning. They trickle into my room once they finish, eager to start our daily routine. Many of them take comfort in the stability that school provides, which is not always present in their outside lives.
My Project
These journals will allow my students to put the conventions of grammar into practice through editing a new sentence every day. Last year, they learned the conventions of grammar, but our curriculum never gave them the chance to actively practice these skills. They write on grade level, but have trouble with the editing process. These journals will give my students an opportunity to learn, discuss, and collaborate while increasing their knowledge of writing conventions.
This project will make a difference by providing a structured routine while reinforcing grammar skills, which is currently their biggest academic need.
My students will be able to start their day with stability and active learning.
