My 6th grade students will begin their first year at ETMS in September. ETMS is a new partnership between two previously separate Richmond, VA public schools, which means that we will all face unique challenges this year. Many of my students will come from different areas of the city, and at least 10% speak a language other than English at home. This year will be a challenging time for everyone as we adjust to new classmates and a new school. Additionally, many of my students are entering the 6th grade with reading abilities several years behind. It is my job to support them in improving their reading skills, whether they read on grade level, above, or below. A key part of this responsibility is providing reading materials and instruction that appropriately support struggling and developing readers, while also challenging my more advanced students.
