I've found that students are more engaged in their classroom content and curriculum when they have opportunities to think creatively with hands-on activities. After reading Rosie Revere, Engineer, my students were able to create working models from recyclables. Just imagine the students, after hearing a story about a famous engineer, becoming engineers themselves! It's amazing to watch as they figure out how to create a circuit with littleBits or a simple machine out of Legos. Probably the most exciting thing I see is when a student's personal interests shine through. One student who loved the subject of the American Revolution designed a marble roller coaster called "The Roller Revolution." After reading a science-based book, the older students are more able to explain the engineering concepts to their younger team members. They truly enjoy being the "teachers" and leading their teams to success. Students are often given a small sample of materials, a very simple illustration of the challenge, and a "How it Works" information sheet that explains which simple machine is being used and the science concept behind it. Once each group has completed their first challenge, they are able to expand on it by explaining how it works, experimenting with different materials to see how it changes, and even changing it's purpose and adding a level of complexity.
