I have many instruments in my class room, but as many of you know, middle school age students can be rather hard on equipment. While I can usually send violins out for repairs as needed, the cases lose bolts and brackets, the handles break off, and the plastic can crack. This is not always a bad thing as any abuse the case suffers usually results in protecting the instrument itself. Do you remember middle school? There are busy hallways, crowded school buses and of course, trips and falls. When a case becomes damaged, often the child will stop carrying it either because of its appearance or because it is just falling apart. This means no practicing at home. These cases that I have chosen will replace some of the damaged ones in my inventory. Providing an instrument to a child next year in a new case will give them a sense of pride among their peers. I strive to add another 40 students to my orchestra in September. Technology makes life easier and more convenient, but watching a child completely engaged and absorbed in playing music on a violin is absolutely inspiring.
