My students need both challenging text to engage with, but also culturally-responsive texts that speak to the diverse cultures of the community. Both of these texts will be centered around rich conversations for 6th grade students about the themes of education, poverty, and culture. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind will be an anchor text for an engineering and design unit on wind mills to create energy. I Am Malala will be an anchor text for memoir writing project and will be compared to the story of William in the Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. These two texts will supplement the other culturally-rich literature of the classroom. The students will be able to engage in higher-order thinking and the world around them. Students will be able to build background knowledge on the world and the power of education and finding a voice.
