Light tables will allow us as educators to integrate science into math and literacy activities. Manipulatives, such as letters, numbers, colorful blocks, and translucent items will promote letter recognition, spatial awareness, patterning and sorting while exposing students to the properties of light and color. When our students use materials at the light table, they will learn many concepts at once. They will build their English vocabulary by arranging letters to form words, practice scientific inquiry skills by exploring the concept of light and shadow, and reinforce math skills by patterning, sorting and building geometric shapes. The light tables will provide a strong academic foundation in math, literacy and science and make learning centers stimulating, engaging and meaningful for our students.
