Literacy extends your life expectancy. The most literate are often the most powerful. When you can read well and write well, you can communicate your needs well. These are all statements from students who've come to understand the power of reading. Every day students read at the beginning of class. Before taking attendance, before talking, before tests, we read. Often, students have to learn to love it again. They remember liking to read in elementary, maybe a bit in middle school, but by the time they get to me in 11th grade, they often hate it. That is where the importance of complex rich literature comes in; books that students feel compelled to read and to share with their peers. Sit around a table with teenagers who talk about the novels they read, and your hope for the future brightens. Reading lives in our classroom, and we need new books to keep us growing as literate citizens in a changing digital world.
