I teach scholars who are three to five years of age in a public school setting, in an urban community. I serve students from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and socioeconomics. Our school district has a seventy percent plus, free or reduced price breakfast and lunch population.
I primarily teach children with special needs, including multiple disabilities, autism, visual, hearing, sensory and attention deficit disorders.
However, I also teach children with English as a second language and typical developing children.
My Project
I serve students with a variety of different learning styles and disabilities. Therefore, I want to use items that incorporate multisensory ways to learn letters and letter sounds.
I picked items that are research based and use movement and music to teach prereading skills.
I picked the Music that Teaches CD and Signal Practice DVD so that we are able to move and learn via music. These items can be used in a variety of ways and in a variety of places. For example, I can use the video, cd, and Animal Alphabet cards at a large group with the whole class or I can use the songs and Animal Alphabet cards in a small group with a few children. I can also easily use the music and movement to teach families to use at home.
