My Students

I am very lucky to have the chance to loop my students this year. My now grade 2 students come to class everyday ready to learn. They are inquisitive, eager and enthusiastic. The most common end of year goal is to independently "read a chapter book". Although, we didn't get to work on our shared goals in the way we wanted this past year we get the opportunity to revisit them and create more.

My students come from many different backgrounds and have varied talents.

Their reading abilities are at various levels each with their own set of challenges.

As adults we forget how and when we first learned to read. It is a joy to guide and assist students throughout the process. It takes time, patience, listening comprehension skills, verbal skills, perseverance and so much more. . Recreating this virtually is a challenge. My students light up when they read a new word and find connections to a text. When a fluent reader begins to comprehend and predict, there is no stopping them. There is no virtual replacement for the joy of sitting with a child while they learn to read but we can always adapt and try,

My Project

Teaching remotely from March to June was a learning curve for all. I did my best to encourage, engage, create and grow.

We learned about neighborhoods from our windows, we played sight word and math facts hopscotch, we built bridges for elephants to cross, created tall towers with Iggy Peck , and orbited the sun.

It was new to me and new to my students but we made the best of it.

This year we are starting like no other. With some new tools in my belt and tricks up my sleeve I am ready for the challenge. While developing my tech skills with new learning management systems and creating a virtual classroom, I also need to normalize it as much as I can for my young learners. Having mobile white board, a stand for my laptop will allow me to teach reading and math more effectively. It will give me traditional tools to support my students in reaching their goals.

New diverse books will help us feel like a family and celebrate our differences. They will support students emotional well being and start important conversations. This is vital to connecting the virtual classroom to students, connecting students with student, connecting teachers with students, and to creating the joy of entering a classroom (virtually or in person).

These materials will also be vital to creating normalcy. When I can finally teach in person, the students will recognize the materials and feel connected to the classroom and to each other.
