My students need a wooden train set, toy garages, wooden vehicles, and wooden community vehicles to work on fine-motor skills toys while also engaging in imaginative play.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In the heart of the cultural center in midtown Detroit, I teach pre-kindergarten students who are a part of the GSR Program. The program is a state-funded preschool for four-year-old children with factors which may place them at risk of educational failure.
For many of my students, GSRP will be their first experience in a school setting.
When they have an impressionable, positive experience in their early years, it can set the path to success for the future.
My Project
Developing fine-motor skills through play allows children to develop skills in an authentic and enjoyable way. While the children are busy manipulating the trains and other pieces, they're using muscles in their fingers that will eventually lead to a better pencil grasp or the ability to tie shoe laces.
My students need a wooden train set, toy garages, wooden vehicles, and wooden community vehicles to work on fine-motor skills toys while also engaging in imaginative play.
Playing trains and automobiles is a fun activity that encourages the repetition of fine-motor skills. Zooming along a train track, building paths, and connecting cars are just some of the things children can do with a train set. The children don't even realize they're working on skills that will help them in their future educational pursuits. As the saying goes, "It's child's play."
