Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My bilingual, special education students are visual and kinesthetic learners who are also creative, inquisitive, compassionate and enthusiastic seventh and eighth graders, who learn differently from others in their grade/age band.
My students’ learning abilities range from autistic to intellectually disabled to learning disabled.
They all have distinct learning needs that are being hindered by a “traditional” environment, instead of having their environment geared towards their learning needs.
My school is a Title I middle school located in the South Bronx and receives 100% free lunch. All my students work hard and have an amazing drive to be successful, despite their differences.
My Project
We have crash-landed into uncharted waters. It is 2020, but we are quarantined and rationing food...who knew? As teachers, we let nothing get in the way of our children learning. As a result, we are doing everything necessary to provide some normalcy into these chaotic and challenging times.
Now that we have entered Remote Learning, the materials I selected will ensure that my students will have access to the resources they had in their classroom.
Unfortunately, I had to leave behind all of their texts and workbooks in the classroom before we went on quarantine. Therefore, I am requesting a book scanner so that I can make copies of special texts and workbook pages to keep them reading at their own grade levels. I also selected a wall calendar so that when I "Zoom" (live lessons via internet camera), they can see what lessons are coming up and they can keep up the pace.
My students are bilingual special education that need explicit teaching to meet their varying academic needs. Please help me provide the best experience possible under these uncertain times!
