Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students are wonderful, creative and inquisitive. Almost all of them come from very challenging home situations so coming to school is their safe haven. We are a public school located in the heart of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
We are aN Arts Integration school, which means in addition to reading, writing and math, students also attend music, drama and art classes each week.
Our students face so many struggles and challenges that they often come to school in fight or flight mode and not ready to learn. They are often sad, angry, tired and hungry which is also not a good place to be when you are trying to learn.
This year we have incorporated self care and wellness into our classrooms so students can learn how to take care of themselves in terms of calming down their bodies and their minds so that they can concentrate on learning.
My Project
The goal of Zentangle for Wellness is to provide students with a variety of tools to be able to calm themselves down. We want to use therapeutic art (Zentangle) to help students learn calming techniques so that they learn how to care for themselves; Self Care. In order to do this type of art, we need fine tip marker and high quality paper. We are incorporating breathing, yoga and therapeutic art so that student have tools to be able to calm themselves down and focus on learning. These materials will help students to create artwork that is both beautiful and therapeutic and allow students to be more productive and be in a better place to learn
