This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I public elementary school serving students who come from low-income households. My classroom provides emotional support skills to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders so that they can be ready to learn.
My students have overcome many challenges during these very trying times but continue to be excited about learning!
Our school fundraises for the basic necessities, but our students are worth so much more than the basics. We work hard to create a safe, positive classroom environment where each pupil’s unique emotional or behavioral needs are met. If given the necessary tools, they are ready to succeed and achieve!
My Project
Working in an emotional support classroom comes with many challenges. More too often my students come to school with heavy hearts and overloaded minds that often interferes with the learning. I want to create a calm environment with soft lighting and optional seating.
Using light filters not only look super cool, but it helps to create a clam space by filtering out harsh florescent lighting that often causes my student headaches.
And because we have computer time, these light filters will help to reduce the glare to the computer screens the students often have concerns with, while helping them to focus and lessening anxiety.
In addition, I want the students to have optional seating when sitting at a desk becomes overwhelming. Giving them a break and a chance to relax while still participating within the classroom environment is my ultimate goal.
