Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a 4th grade class in the Chicago Public School system located in Albany Park. Our class population is mostly made up of ELL and diverse learners with sensory needs that come from low income families. A great percentage of the students in our class have anxiety, sensory processing, and/or ADD & ADHD. I have an inclusive classroom with very diverse students that learn in different ways. Most of my students have many social and emotional struggles, as well as sensory challenges going on in their lives right now that are distracting them from focusing in class. My students are hardworking and eager to learn, grow, and succeed in life and in school. They are sweet with great character and we are already like one big happy family ready to take on the challenges that we will face head on.
My Project
Every day I have students ask, "Can I sit...(you name it and they have probably asked it)?" We currently have a black dorm chair and a deep pressure boat for my students to move around to work in a comfortable area. They cherish the day they are able to have flexible seating to sit in a chair other than their desk chair. These active seating options will give students an opportunity to move around and feel comfortable while working. By givings students seating choices that allow them to move and feel comfortable, the brain is able to learn and retain content that is taught in our stress free learning environment. Research shows that physical activity and less stress actually enhances the learning process. So as students are persevering through a difficult math or reading task, they will be able to plow through the challenge! Many of my students are not allowed to play outside after school because the neighborhood is not safe. Giving them an opportunity to fidget, wiggle, and feel safe in school, they will be benefit socially, emotionally, and academically. On top of the benefits of stress free learning, my students who struggle with ADHD often try to focus and pay attention in class, but have a hard time doing so. They feel negatively about school, learning, and themselves. These seating alternatives will help them stay on task, so they can focus and absorb the concepts being taught.
Being able to give my students the choice to sit comfortably while learning and working will positively impact their learning, as well as their confidence and self-esteem throughout their daily learning.
