My Students

My students are brand new to me as we are opening a new school together! I am so excited to get to know them and instill a love for music and making music with each other. My students come from very diverse backgrounds and varying economic needs, but they all have a love for music and learning to play instruments.

As a brand new school, we do not have the equipment of an established school and need to work to gather enough resources to meet all of our student needs.

We run on a very limited budget while doing a lot of in-school fundraising. Any outside support would be greatly needed and appreciated.

My Project

Playing instruments and creating their own music deeply engages any student and promotes a deeper understanding of the subject. Our school is brand new and has no xylophones or barred instruments. Having these mallet instruments would enable all students to be involved in the creative process of composing, performing, and improvising.

My students need a soprano, alto, and bass xylophone to add to our existing drums.

These xylophones will have many uses in our classroom! First, my students will be able to accompany themselves and participate in a music ensemble. This will enable them to learn about beat, harmony, and rhythm. Additionally, when students play music together they are developing their listening and critical thinking skills, as well as their rhythmic skills. Second, it allows students the opportunity to improvise, compose, and perform their own music. Drums are great for rhythm, but we really need barred instruments to create and understand melody and harmony.

The instruments will be used across the school from kindergarten up through fifth grade. Students in all grade levels engage in improvisation and composition while developing a love for music.
