They are all eager learners, but lack the supplies necessary to bring them to the next level. They struggle with their focus and engagement with the mathematics content.
State testing requires my students to become proficient problem solvers, thinkers, and writers in the subject of mathematics. To meet this goal they will need more than just textbooks.
My Project
I am requesting a classroom subscription to Mathalicious through AKJ Books, which is an online program that supports textbooks by creating opportunities for deep classroom conversations around topics that kids care about. Each lesson revolves around a large central question, of high-interest, to begin rich conversation regarding the math topics involved and how they transfer to real-life situations. For example: Should McDonald's rewrite its menu in terms of exercise? Do taller Olympic sprinters have an unfair advantage? These sound like fun topics to investigate!
In an age of high-stakes testing, it is imperative that my students learn to relate their mathematical knowledge to the real world.
