I am a third grade teacher at Dixon Elementary School. Dixon Elementary is in a low income area and is a Title 1 School. As part of our curriculum we teach Letter Writing. Letter writing is getting to be something of a lost art. Everyone likes to receive something in the mail that we can open and touch and keep in our personal treasure drawer. We need to keep this art alive. I would like to have special paper and envelopes for students to use to write letters. I have established a mail center in my room which will be used to teach students how to write letters and cards. It will also teach students the process of sending and receiving letters. Students may send letters to each other and to other classes. I also anticipate working with the USO, a Veteran's group, or a parent who is deployed overseas to connect with a military unit so we can write to them. The letters would be meaningful to our military overseas and would help teach the students to write letters. The materials we will need are special paper, envelopes and stamps. Having these items will encourage students to want to write letters because they will get to use special materials. It will also teach students to care about others and to understand that writing is a great way of communicating. I believe that activity will extend to an interest and excitment in all forms of writing. Thank you for helping.
