My students need 14 collections of books to read during the summer to prevent them from losing ground. These include leveled sets of fiction, nonfiction, high interest, Ready-to-Read Wonders of America, and I Can Read.
Each year many of our students lose ground while at home for the summer. All of the hard work and effort they put in for reading is lost if they are not challenged during the two months they are away. My goal is to stop the summer "slide" from happening to our students.
We are the proud members of the newest elementary school in our county.
Our students come from a vast rural area and span all socio-economic levels. We have approximately 300 students. They love to learn and are making great strides with our reading program. They learn in a cooperative classroom setting, so they are able to work well individually, with partners, and in groups. They will love reading and expressing themselves in a new and exciting way.
My Project
We want to inspire students and encourage them to read during the summer in a new and exciting way. Rather than coming to school during the summer, we will bring the school to them! They will be sent one of the requested books on their reading and interest level. They will have to answer a few questions regarding their understanding of the content they read on a postcard. After completing the required questions, they will mail-in the prepaid postcard with their answers. After checking their answers, we will mail them a new book with a new set of instructions and another postcard. They will get to keep the books we send them.
By having at-risk students participate in this alternative summertime reading program, they will be engaged, motivated and more prepared for reading at an appropriate level at the beginning of the next school year.
