Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is comprised of the most amazing preschool to eight grade students. I am fortunate to work in a school climate where diversity is appreciated and respected, and inclusion is the norm. My kids are more than just students; they are our future! It’s exciting to see our students each and every day make a difference.
This year our school-wide focus is spreading positivity and including everyone to create a successful, safe, and comfortable learning community.
As part of this goal, we would like to install a buddy bench on our school playground. A Buddy Bench is a designated place on campus where a child can go if he or she is feeling alone and in need of peer support. Other children are taught that when they see a fellow-student sitting on the bench, they can go ask that child to play or they can sit with them on the bench to just talk and enjoy one another’s company. We are optimistic that a Buddy Bench will help us be successful in creating an environment where kindness wins!
My Project
Our school would benefit from having a Buddy Bench on our playground. A Buddy Bench will help teach our students empathy and social skills. As teachers, we often observe students who struggle to connect with others. It’s heart breaking to see a student sitting alone at recess/breaks. This bench will also help teachers and proctors identify who needs extra love and attention on any given day. The Buddy Bench will be a place they can go sit, and when others see a classmate sitting on the bench, they can go ask him/her if they want to play or just hang out.
The Buddy Bench will be a great way to encourage kids to be kind to others!
I take pride in the compassion our students hold. A buddy bench would give them an opportunity to show their compassion and empathy to other students in need. This bench, once installed, will impact children, grades kindergarten through eighth, during the school day and even after school when our playground is used by the after school program and parks and recreation.
