My students need yoga props including blocks, straps, and eye pillows to take their yoga practice to the next level increasing self-regulation and coping skills.
I work in a family-friendly, smallish school environment with highly intelligent, uniquely quirky students who hold themselves to high academic and moral standards. For the most part, our student body values intelligence and creativity over compliance and appearance.
My students tend to be compassionate and righteous.
Many of them have struggled to belong in more typical school environments enabling them to have insight and compassion for their fellow classmates. Our school tends to be an oasis for the unique and unconventional learner.
Our students appreciate a challenge. They tend to overachieve, overthink, and overanalyze, all of which is part of their brilliance. When the pressures of their expectations become overwhelming, however, my students lean on me. I, as their school counselor, help them temper achievement and competition with social and emotional well-being and self-acceptance.
My Project
I instruct a 15-student yoga class during our learning extension achievement program, better known as "LEAP Day," twice a day every third Friday. LEAP day allows students to pursue interests outside of their regular academic schedule by attending activities, clubs, classes, and competitions. The LEAP program creates a sense of community while building a positive school culture. PSA students choosing to attend yoga sessions during LEAP Day learn self-regulation, focus, and coping skills for depression, anxiety, and stress; my class is always full. I hope to expand my yoga offerings this year to include a more restorative class. When students have props, such as blocks, straps, and bolsters they can better access poses and/or relax into them. Using straps helps students build flexibility. Blocks and bolsters help in numerous poses allowing students to access postures more fully. This grants the body an opportunity to relax, increases flexibility, brings blood flow and health to the facia, and restores parasympathetic balance.
