Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most PE classes do not start in downward facing dog, but our high school offers the opportunity to enroll in yoga as an alternative option for PE credit. Though many of the students were skeptical at first, they have found peace not only in their daily lives at school, but in their home lives as well.
My students are powerful, amazing and brave high school students from low income communities where less than 10% are expected to graduate from college.
They are enrolled in a rigorous school with a grand mission "to increase the number of Houstonians from low income communities who graduate from a four-year college." With that mission comes great stress and pressure for these students. It is best to tell you their experience with yoga in some of their own words: "Yoga is an oasis of calmness from my everyday routine... All day we carry baggage that burdens us. And in yoga we get to release it." "Yoga. It sets my mind free, even for just a bit, from running on and on." "Yoga is a place to relax, express your emotions and have control and clarity of the thoughts inside your mind."
My Project
This project will cover the cost of a weekend yoga retreat. This retreat is a uniquely memorable high school experience that supports students currently enrolled in yoga, previous students of yoga, and graduates once enrolled in yoga. The opportunity to leave campus and spend a weekend devoted to self-improvement provides students with tools to combat stress and anxiety they may experience in life.
Each yoga retreat offers the opportunity to transform not only physically, but emotionally as well.
The students arrive at the retreat center on Friday and remain through Sunday afternoon engaging in yoga classes, mindfulness practices, and healthy food preparation. This retreat offers the students a tranquil place to eat, stay, and practice.
