Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low-income area in San Jose, California. We are a Title I school and the majority of my students receive free and reduced lunch. Though my students lack the funds to experience many of the bay area's attractions, they are still interested in learning about their community and the opportunities they have for growth, academically, physically, and professionally.
My students need all the help they can get.
They often come from households where their parents work two jobs and have minimal time left to devote to their children. This lack of attention often leads to disinterest in school and poor grades.
I really want to provide my students with other sources of reading material that I feel will help engage their interest in school and the desire to be the good citizens of tomorrow.
My Project
An exceptional book, especially one that connects to the lives of young readers, is a teacher's dream. The majority of my students have grown up in an age that has made them accustomed to getting information in small chunks and so reading an entire book can seem like a daunting task.
The inspirational book, Wonder, will be used to teach my students that there are books available for them that can be captivating, yet able to teach them something about life.
In this case, it includes empathy, perseverance, and dealing with bullying.
It is my hope and goal that my students realize that reading is an important skill that will serve them well throughout their educational lives and beyond.
