Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mindfulness is a practice where we focus on whatever task we are doing at a particular moment, giving it our undivided attention, aware of our thoughts and emotions but not reacting to or judging whatever flows through the stream of our mind. This is a skill that both students and teachers need to learn as a tool both inside and outside of the classroom.
The data of my school and the district shows that I along with my colleagues serve a diverse population that are largely economically disadvantaged, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities.
My school is a Title I school where 83% receive free and reduced-price lunch. However, if you look close enough and see past that, you will see that these are intelligent, resilient, talented students. They are leaders, helpers, athletes, and change agents despite the obstacles they face outside of school or within themselves; teaching them mindfulness and how to practice the pause is going to transform their lives and the lives of the teachers. I am hoping to raise the funds to purchase materials to host classes at the school for the staff, students, and community.
My Project
I am asked and am honored daily to help meet the needs of both staff and students as well as the community in which I serve. Often I witness both teachers and students struggle to take a breath from the daily stresses that burden them both in and out of the classroom. I see students and teachers reacting to each other rather than responding.
I am requesting yoga materials to provide yoga classes for teachers and students to support them in wellness and social-emotional learning practices that will enhance both the individual teachers and the students' collective well-being.

The yoga blocks will help me to unleash the full potential of every student AND teacher as a vehicle for social change.
Research has demonstrated the negative impact of educator stress on teaching and learning and the positive impact that enhancing teacher well-being can have on student social-emotional and academic outcomes. I will be able to offer classes to the students and teachers. The community in which I serve does not have access to this type of wellness program. Our students have had many struggles in dealing with home life and school life, and this has increased since recent Parkland tragedy here in Broward County.
Being in a public school in a low socioeconomic area, I look forward to providing these materials to assist with my yoga class so that they don't have to!
