This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Title I school where 97% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Although some students may come from difficult situations, they are all highly motivated, talented, and inspirational young learners.
In my classroom, students learn to love reading by engaging in discussion of literature and through identifying with characters in books.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with these wonderful young people and to help them on their journey to becoming lifelong fans of reading.
My Project
One of the best ways to get students interested in writing is to give them an authentic audience. Just turning in a paper to their teacher is not as exciting as having their peers get a chance to read their final work.
My students have been working towards "publishing" their writing all year.
They will now be selecting one piece to edit, write, and illustrate their own hardcover book to share with the class. They will get to take these books home to give to their parents when we have finished presenting them. My students are very excited for this project, now they just need the books to make it possible!
