My classroom is part of a growing community of public Montessori schools in the Dallas Independent School District. My grade level is called Primary, and includes students between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. This correlates to Prek3, Prek4, and Kindergarten on a standard campus.
3-5 year olds are the best people on the planet.
You just can’t match their natural curiosity, buoyant enthusiasm, and heartfelt trust. It has been my privilege to walk with these young children during my teaching career.
Developing fine motor skills is a key component of a quality Prekindergarten and Kindergarten education. This year my students will learn the art of weaving on a loom using beautiful, jumbo yarns. The children will build their finger strength and dexterity as they learn to weave the weft (yarn) between the warp (the strings on the weaving frame). The children will have free choice of yarn colors, thereby developing their color sense and giving them free artistic expression. The finished products will be hung in our Montessori classroom, and sent home at the end of the year. This activity will teach my students how to overcome the frustration associated with learning a new skill, and teach them a wonderful, ancient art form.
