My students need colored sculpting dough, stampers, rollers, design tools and a storage unit with bins so they can roll, slice, mold and decorate incredible works of art.
Do you remember being 5 years old and feeling the excitement of opening a new can of Playdough? The smell, the feel, the endless possibilities of that soft little cylinder of dough? There is no money in our budget for art supplies, so this is an experience my students are not getting at school.
Three afternoons each week, I teach an art enrichment period to three classes, totaling 65 students.
My students are kindergarteners at a California public school that, unfortunately, has little or no money for the arts. The children come from all shapes and sizes of families, from single parent to multi-generational homes. Many different races and languages are represented, and this wealth of cultures brings a unique tone to the little society of our classroom.
My Project
Can't you just picture a classroom full of kindergarteners digging into a brand new set of molding dough? Just think of the smiles on the childrens' faces when they get to roll out the dough, mold it into fantastic creatures, cut it into interesting shapes, and experience the smell, look, and feel of this very first exposure to the art of sculpture.
The materials I'm requesting will allow my students to enjoy many art lessons on how to handle molding dough, and the infinite possibilities contained in this medium. The rolling and cutting accessories will allow the children to shape the dough in new ways, developing both fine motor skills and artistic sensibility. And the indispensable storage materials will keep the art supplies neat and fully accessible to the students.
My students, like all children, love to learn new things through art.
It's a sad truth that due to our limited budget, it's a constant struggle for me to bring fun and educational art experiences to these children. This project will allow the students to develop as learners and budding artists.
