Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have highly motivated Biology and AP Environmental Science students.
Our school is a Medicine and Science Magnet school located in the inner city.
Our students are Title I eligible and are underrepresented minorities - especially in STEM fields. Our school offers a college-preparatory path for students, including four years of science and math. The 9th-grade Biology class offers the first high school opportunity for our students to develop a love of science, while the 12th AP Environmental Science class offers students in their 4th year of Science opportunity to learn about advanced topics.
My Project
My students participate in many laboratory activities requiring detailed work. Detailed work, including dissecting owl pellets, sorting fine minerals, and locating and identifying soil organisms requires simple, yet important tools--forceps and handheld magnifying glasses. Because we have larger class sizes and limited materials, students must now share forceps and magnifying glasses when this equipment is needed for detailed work.
Having the right tools, no matter how simple, can make a tremendous impact when exploring science.
With your support, all students will be able to work simultaneously exploring and learning, finding and seeing, instead of having to wait for their turn to use the equipment.
