Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My current 50 high school students are wonderful individuals who are eager to learn and it is my pleasure to serve as their English teacher. They are English Language Learners who attend a school which receives Title I funds. Many of them have recently arrived to the United States, leaving their parents in their native country. Some of my students have night jobs or attend adult school to better themselves. Due to their socio-economic situation, school is their only access to technology to complete class assignments.
My students have always been welcomed to my desktop computer and printer to publish their projects for my class or for their other subjects.
Though the classroom assigned to me was furnished with a desktop and printer, the computer is outdated and unreliable. Most of the time, the monitor will not come out of sleep mode. When it does, the mouse is not detected by the computer and the hard drive constantly sounds like it is overheating and about to crash.
My Project
My request is for one desktop computer with one monitor for my classroom. Students will be able to publish their classroom assignments for their English, History, Math Class, etc. from their Google accounts or jump drives.
The access to an updated desktop computer would allow students to accomplish their academic goals throughout high school and would enable them to pursue a college education.
The computer will also allow students to complete college applications and apply for scholarships. My classroom has become a safe space where students support each other in their classwork. The accessibility to a new functioning computer would allow for more students to be supported and stay on track to graduation and continue on to college.
