Ella Fitzgerald said, "The only thing better than singing, is more singing." She was right! My students love coming to choir to sing their hearts out. They enjoy the opportunity to express themselves, and are always proud of their accomplishments on and off the stage.
My seventh and eighth grade chorus students choose to take my class as an elective.
For many, this is their first real experience reading music and performing, and they are often surprised at the dedication and professionalism it takes to be successful as an ensemble.
Although my class is considered difficult to some because of all of the brand new material, all of my students enjoy coming to chorus because they can be themselves and relax. Many of my students come from low-income families and struggle to find peace at home, and, of course at this age, in their social lives. Singing is their release!
My Project
I promote a classroom environment that is supportive, encouraging, and all of my students know how much I care about them. I am passionate about training them to be the best professional young musicians in the classroom and on the stage that they can be. But, every day they enter my room and take their tattered, old paper music folders out of their assigned slot and start rehearsal making sure they still have a front and back to their folder and that nothing fell out on the way back to their seat. My students need proper materials so that they can focus their energy on learning!
All of our written materials for lessons on music theory, history, sight singing and listening exercises in addition to all of the choral octavos they sing from have to make their way in and out of their folders on a daily basis.
These black choir folders are the industry standard.
All young musicians should grow up carrying one of these chock-full of music! I know these folders will help my students feel more confident about our ensemble and themselves, and they will feel proud to be a part of their choir. These quality folders will last a long time and I hope to be able to use them with my choirs for years to come!
