Kids love to learn about the world. They love using maps to identify places. A parent at my school and I are getting students excited to learn geography. The students in my classroom couldn't identify the seven continents upon entering school but now they can.
Most of my students have traveled very little.
Driving 20 minutes to go across the river to the next state is a big adventure for them. This geography program gives them the opportunity to learn about the world. I hope it will inspire them to discover new places, learn about different cultures, and seek adventures of their own someday. We are a Title I school. Many of my students come from impoverished homes. This program helps them understand that there is a whole world out there just waiting to be discovered.
My Project
The students at my school are studying world geography this year. They are assessed monthly on their knowledge of the world's countries and landforms. When our kids view the Winter Olympics this year, they will know the names and locations of the countries. This matters in today's global culture. When there is a natural disaster half way across the world, our students will know where that country is. This knowledge will help them to connect and empathize with people around the world. Your donation will go toward prizes that will motivate them to keep studying hard throughout the school year. We are hoping to get two Smart Globes as top prizes for our geography program. We also want to get puzzles, games, and globes as prizes for our hardworking students. The students came into the school year knowing little to no world geography. They are working each month to learn up to 20 new countries in the world. We would love to reward them with a prize for their success.
Knowing the location of any country is the first step to becoming a world traveler!
It will enable my students to view themselves as world citizens. One of my favorite quotes is, "The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together."
