This year, I am excited to be the STEM teacher for our newly created STEM Lab. With 600 students, it is more important than ever for me to plan effective instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
My students light up when they come to the STEM Lab to do project-based learning based upon the Engineering Design Process Skills.
Our Title I school is located in a rural area near a beach community. Our population is diverse in socio-economic levels and ethnicity, with a growing ELL population. We have many families who lack the technology that the majority of students have today.
My Project
My students love being engineers and they love LEGO toys. I am trying to provide them with the tools they need to put the engineering design process skills to practice. My students ask questions, explore topics, plan how to solve a problem, create models, test their models, make improvements, and share their results with others.
In addition, my students are using other important skills weekly such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.
I love to listen to the engaging conversations as these young engineers tackle problems and use their growth mindset to persevere even when they have difficulties. My students have "can-do" attitudes.
I have materials for my older students, but I am still in need of kits to support my younger students. These two kits will be used in the classroom, as well as during our Family STEM Night. Thank you in advance for all donations.
