My Students
Many of my fourth graders are talented musicians who have been learning how to play instruments like the cello, saxophone, and piano. They're also learning how to read music and write original compositions in music class!
These kids are motivated, hard-working, and eager students who really love to express themselves musically.
Many of them are English language learners who come from low-income families. They take school very seriously and love to impress adults with how smart and talented they are!
My Project
Researchers who study the impact of music on education have found that music instruction facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children use in other areas. They have also found a causal link between music and spatial intelligence. Understanding music can help children visualize various elements that should go together, like they would do when solving a math problem. My students have been composing original songs in small groups using Orff metallophones but these instruments are shared with other students around the district. My class currently has access to these instruments for less than one hour each week.
These new keyboards with headphones and stands would allow my students to compose original songs for class projects and videos during their free time in class, before school, and after school.
They would be able to further demonstrate their understanding of harmony, consonance, and dissonance, as well as tonal systems and rhythm.
