Our district recently transitioned from K-5 neighborhood schools to grade level schools and we are privileged to serve the K-1 population. We feel lunchtime will provide the perfect teaching and practice time! We would like to introduce a salad bar for students. This would be the perfect opportunity for students to learn independence. responsibility, and good eating habits. The appropriately sized equipment is essential to our plan. Our students were so excited getting to serve themselves and ate better when doing so.
All the lunchroom items need to be lower.
This includes a salad bar cart with child sized serving utensils, garbage containers, and a water dispenser that is easy for little hands to operate so can reduce spills. Serving utensils that can be easily manipulated by their small but growing hands are necessary. Our staff has already implemented students serving themselves certain food items using what we have and we are able to get by but this is not K-1 friendly.
My Project
Our young students love to be independent and eat healthier when serving themselves but need equipment for their small size. The plastic serving spoons are lighter than metal ones we currently have and slightly larger on the top making it easier to grasp and control. This helps keep that food area cleaner.
The beverage dispenser would enable proper positioning of cups without spilling which has been an issue with the cooler currently utilized.
Holding a lever down rather than trying to hold their cup and push in a button is easier for young children.
Smaller garbage cans need to be lower, enabling students to dispose of food without having it get on them.
