I have 12 first graders in my class this school year. I come from a small elementary school of between 80-90 students K-6. They are so excited to come to school and learn new things. Our students come from families who support our school and participate in their children's learning.
Students at this age love to learn through movement, which is a big part of why I love teaching first graders!
They are excited about everything we are doing in the classroom. They are blossoming into readers and writers at this age, as well as really building on their math abilities.
My Project
My students love the 2 yoga balls that our generous donor from our first project funded for us, but it's such a popular seating choice that the kids asked me to request a couple more. They have been very responsible with the first 2 yoga balls, so I told them I would request more. Flexible seating is a way to give kids choices of where to sit to do their best work.
My students get so excited when it's STEM activity time!
Many of our STEM activities include building different structures to hold weight, conceal an object, etc. We currently use pattern blocks, unifix cubes, and our place value hundreds and tens to build these different structures. These choices are working fine, but my students would benefit from more options to build their structures such as the Zoob Builderz, MagnaTiles, and BrickLab.
I've seen many fun learning games from other teachers involving the Don't Break the Ice game. It can be used for math facts, sight word recognition, and so much more. The students will answer the fact or read the sight word, and then they will hit that ice block. It's a fun way to practice the skills they need for reading and math!
