Young Boys Begging for Books

My students need 27 book titles and series, such as "Hole in My Life" and "Percy Jackson and the Olympians", that keeps our readers reading!

My Students

I teach at a wonderful school in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood and teach an amazing, motivated group of 7th and 8th grade students. It has been over 4 months since the start of the year and they are still steadily pushing towards their goal of meeting the school's 40 Book Campaign.

Ideally, my students would love to get their hands on current reads, but the reality at our high-needs, Title I school is that students have limited access to good books in our library.

The library shelves are lined with very worn books and outdated reference materials and is in serious need of restocking. My young readers devoured my few teacher copies of books, but for several classes of 30 students each, it has not been enough. It breaks my heart to see my students come to school every day, prepared to meet their goal of making two years reading growth this year and not having the resources to do so. Our small, local neighborhood library is lacking in its young adult book selection and many of my students are unable to afford books at the bookstore. They do with what they have and are making great progress, but having access to a solid collection of books would take them even further along the path to success.

My Project

While all my students have been working hard to develop as readers, my boys, in particular, have needed a little extra encouragement to get there. The lack of connection to meaningful contexts and experiences in the very outdated books available in our classroom library have made reading a less than an enjoyable activity for them. When I did bring in a handful of graphic novels and books with male protagonists, they could not get enough of it. With better access to materials of interest, their reading attitudes and achievement immediately improved. With the addition of more "boy books," like the "Chronicles of Vladimir Tod," a series about a thirteen-year-old boy with a secret, and "Scrawl," a book about a male bully, to our library, this will continue to be made possible. It will give them access to stories that deals with real life issues and situations they themselves experience.

I would love to help them continue to develop a passion and enthusiasm for reading.

Your support will be vital to this endeavor. Your donation will improve their reading, stretch their knowledge of the world, and quench their thirst for more. You will be supporting them in their journey as growing readers in middle school and beyond.
