Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach seventh and eighth grade Advanced ESL at an inner city school in the Watts section of Los Angeles, CA. My students come from the four housing projects which surround the school. My students have learned how to speak and understand English, but are still developing their writing skills. My focus this year is on developing their written expression through various genres (poetry, fictional stories, research reports, etc.) by using the steps of the writing process. In order to do this, the students will need a portfolio to keep their writing in as they move through the writing process (prewriting, drafts, editing, proofreading and final presentation). They will use the portfolios at student led parent conferences to demonstrate their learning progress. The 70 students will need three ring binders, dividers, and sheet protectors to keep their final presentations clean. Students will be able to keep their writing portfolios at the end of the year, and gain pride in how much they have accomplished.
