Our challenge is purposeful/exciting engagement. We believe students must create with their new knowledge and visions. This enables stronger understanding and retention, which means this knowledge will be recalled and used as the children grow. Art supplies ensure we are able to teach this way.
Our students are amazing 5th graders.
They are hard working and dedicated. They love to learn through exploration and we are sure to teach using backwards unit design and inquiry based learning. Our school is a 100% poverty school, whose budget is constantly being cut. We must give them everything from the basics of education to the most exciting things in life in order for them not to miss out on what other students get each day at home.
My Project
We are requesting paints so that we are able to integrate the arts in our classroom, throughout all curriculum. Our school, unfortunately, is without an art teacher... which means we are also without art supplies. This also means that all possible exposure to the arts must come from the classroom teacher. It is truly fun and exciting for the students to take their Science and History out of the book and create with their knowledge, and we need art supplies to do this.
This project is so very important to us because it allows us to always have culminating activities for our content units.
It also allows the students to know what it means to "Make School by Hand"... which I borrow from the title of an amazing piece of professional literature titled "Making School by Hand". It enhances their learning and their love for education and the arts. We hope this love of creating and learning will continue throughout their learning careers.
