My Students

My students are passionate about becoming better citizens and human beings. They live in a small, rural town where they are often sheltered from the complex issues of today’s society. They have a drive to learn, and a need to improve themselves both mentally and emotionally. They strive to be empathetic to the pains and trials of others, as well as so their part to make the world a better place. However, until they can dive deep into first-hand accounts regarding the social injustices common outside of their society, they will struggle to understand the complexity of these issues from the point of views of others.

My Project

Reading the novel The Hate U Give will allow my students to receive a first-hand perspective of common modern societal issues through the eyes of a teen narrator just like them. Their eyes will be open to the feelings, internal and external conflicts, as well as the perspective of a fellow teen faced with a situation typical of our modern society, but perhaps foreign to them in such a small town. Topics like racial injustice, the low-income struggle, and bullying are extremely important in today’s society, and it’s improtant for our youth to understand and explore these topics in a critical and analytical way.
