Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a high trauma community, school is a rare place where young people are able to interact with peers and learn about friendship, communication, conflict resolution, and what it means to be an exemplar student and caring member of a community.

Our diverse kindergarten community is located in Oakland, California, and represents the highly diverse community.

Our school has one of the highest ethnic diversity index scores of all elementary schools in the district. Multiple countries and languages are represented by our students and families, of which 35 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our school is committed to creating a space where our students can feel safe enough to open their minds and hearts to learning.

My Project

Before entering our room, our kindergarten students are faced with mountains high as the sky - the mountains of their past and future. Immutable, the mountains may seem insurmountable. But who are we if we do not prepare our young leaders to face the mountains of life with ferocity and zeal and to move them with the power of their heart, mind and soul?

Every young person who enters our classroom will know that they will grow up to move mountains.

This will be possible because the student's faces and stories will be reflected in the morning circle centerpiece, on the walls, and in the pride of their creations on display. Each student's goals, worries, strengths, and needs will be known so that we can work together to prepare them for the long journey ahead.

This will be possible because the message of moving mountains will resonate from from all around and throughout our learning environment. The paper mountains along the highest wall to the mountain covered pillows in the calm corner remind them that while our obstacles may seem beyond our reach they are also within our reach. The framed phrases like "Everyone Has a Story" and "Some See Weeds, Others See Wishes" will remind us of our discussions and lessons about community, diversity, and perspective. The serene bulletin boards themed for exploration will create a focal point for celebrated student work and community roles. Personal material and supply cases will allow students to gather artifacts, pictures, stories, and artwork throughout a project. A lantern will create a safe space for student to share notes with the teacher. The students will know in their core they are explorers with the strength to move mountains.
