My Students

My students enter the classroom each day with a desire to learn. "What are we learning about today?" is one of the first questions I get in the morning and everyday it brings me joy. My students are hungry for what comes next in the curriculum and work hard to achieve their very best. This year, our school has changed to a Multi-Track Year-Round calendar where teachers and students are on and off track throughout the year. With this, students are developing resiliency, due to the fact that as soon as they learn a routine, it changes.

While S.

S. Elementary, home of the otters, is located in Nevada and is nestled in a neighborhood community, many students come from a variety of backgrounds and access. At first glance, it would appear that students here come from affluent backgrounds and have access to a multitude of resources; however, that is not always the case. What my students lack in access they make up for in heart! They have supportive families and work hard daily to make their parents proud. At the end of every rotation, I have students thanking me for teaching them, a moment I cherish.

My Project

Having a set of four tablets in my classroom will allow for individualized instruction and access to grade level content for all students. One way they will be used is for interventions. Students will be able to access content at their ability level and their progress toward meeting grade level standards can be monitored more closely. Also, students will be able to meet in small groups and access grade level content at their level through the use of technology. Depending on the grouping, students may be able to watch a video to access content, read along with a text that they listen to or complete an extension activity through the use of the Internet and other applications.

Our students come to us with a wide range of skills and having tablets, will allow for all students to have the opportunity to access content in a way that is both understandable and engaging.

There are lots of apps available to students to enhance their learning. One we plan to use with this technology is the SeeSaw app. This application allows students to "blog" with writing, video recording or drawing in response to content and questions in a safe forum. The general public cannot access the student work because it is protected through the use of access codes. Another application we plan to use regularly is Front Row, it is individualized instruction in all content areas at the student's independent level. Since students perform at a variety of levels it allows them to work at their level.

Students today are accustomed to using technology to enhance their learning. It is important to provide those opportunities in the classroom on a daily basis. Tablets are not a means to replace instruction but rather, help the instruction come alive and be meaningful through technology.
