My Students
My students are discovering a love for reading. They are disappearing into their stories, poetry, and nonfiction selections more every day.
Their pleas for five more minutes at the end of our reading time brings a smile to my face and tells me we are on the right track. I've watched many reluctant readers find a book that clicks with who they are and what they love. I've watched my bookworms branch out into genres they may never have considered.
My goal is not only to let them take the lead in their reading lives but to also help them discover their potential that can stay locked up inside.
My Project
At the beginning of this school year, we embarked on a challenge: each student (and me) will read forty books in one school year. To this end, we spend the first ten to fifteen minutes of each class period reading books that we choose. Our first DonorsChoose project gave my classroom a wonderful start with new titles.
Tapping into my students' discovery of the joys of reading, we find ourselves and the halfway point, hungering for more fresh and exciting books! My classroom library has been picked over, with some students rereading their favorite titles.
More choices in their hands now will lead to a generation of widely read and curious young people. Young people who aren't afraid to step out of their comfort zones because they know what they like to read and, more importantly, that they can accomplish a challenge.
