Technology advances are phenomenal! We are preparing our students for a world where we don't know what the technology will be like or what kind of jobs will need to be filled but we do know it will involve technology!
The school I teach in is a Title One school, meaning there is a majority of kids that receive free or reduced price lunches.
There are also eight public housing projects that are serviced by our school. My students don't have much technology at home but the world we live in, requires you to be technologically savvy. My students are capable of learning in the 21st century if given the right tools.
My Project
With the emphasis in testing in the past years, my social studies class often gets put on the back burner in terms of resources. My class is not tested and therefore, the limited resources are given to the English and math classes. History comes alive with technology. This is why I have requested an iPad and protective case. We can play games that put us in the action leading up to the American Revolution or in the shoes of a runaway slave. We can take a virtual field trip to colonial Williamsburg and learn what America was like before it was independent. We can play the games "Oregon Trail" and make decisions as if we were crossing our great nation for the first time like the pioneers did.
Technology brings history alive!
The more my students can learn about the past, the better equipped they will be to face the challenges of the future and be the change we need in our future leaders. It is for these reasons my students would benefit from an iPad that would remain in our room. The technology advances exponentially in this world and giving my students access to current technology, will allow them to understand our past and also expose them to technology for the future.
