My students come to kindergarten with a variety of experiences, backgrounds, and academic levels. Kindergarten will be the first structured learning opportunity for some, while others have been in “school” since before they were three years old. Whether they are new and timid or seasoned and boisterous, my students find friendship, comfort, love, and knowledge in our classroom. My students learn, play, and grow using hands-on opportunities to explore the shapes, colors, numbers, letters, and words that build the world around them.
Five year olds are eager to learn new things, and the kindergarten classroom is perfect for this learning to take place.
My students will spend their time in the classroom learning the alphabet and how letters are turned into the words of their favorite storybooks. They will learn about numbers and shapes and find them in real-world situations. Most importantly, my students will learn how to be friends to their new classmates that are different from them yet very much the same. The learning my students will encounter this year through play and investigation will be the base for them to build on for years to come.
My Project
Flexible seating in the kindergarten classroom will help my students take ownership in their learning by allowing them to choose where they feel comfortable to work, socialize, and play in the classroom. The products I have chosen for this project will help my 5 and 6 year old students move around the room to find where they work best and get some of their "wiggles out" which they cannot do while sitting at a table in a traditional classroom setting.
Flexible seating options will give my students the opportunity to move within the classroom to where they feel most comfortable to do their best work.
Comfy floor cushions will be used while reading or at a writing station with clipboards, the portable lap desks will be used around the room during stations, and the balance disks can be used in chairs for students who may still want to sit at a table, but need a little movement as they work. Giving my students choice in where they work, as well as the opportunity for movement, will make a lasting positive impact in the classroom.
