Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have entered the world of academia complete with rules, consequences, and rewards. I award prizes to students who show they have followed our class procedures, both inside the classroom and out on the yard. Giving incentives increases positive behaviors.
I have a combo class of 12 transitional kindergarten students who are 4 years old and 11 kindergarten students who are 5 years old.
Nineteen of my students are English Language Learners with Spanish and Korean as their first language. Seven of my students receive speech services and two of my students are developmentally delayed. All of the students in my class qualify for the free lunch program. A group of them struggle with following classroom rules. Whenever possible, I prefer offering tangible rewards for good behavior as opposed to imposing punitive consequences for rules broken.
My Project
I am requesting stickers, pencils, and puzzles as incentives for my students to follow class rules. With our incentive point system, students can buy stickers and pencils with fewer points or save up to buy a puzzle or one of the other prizes we already have in the treasure box. This project will motivate my students to develop positive habits of behavior with regards to socialization with peers, working hard at their academics, and becoming responsible citizens.
This project is important because students will be motivated to develop habits that will help them throughout their academic careers.
Students will learn to follow rules to help keep them safe. They will learn that if they do their work in class and at home they will experience more academic success. They will learn to use their words instead of their hands to resolve conflicts. These are lessons that if learned well, will benefit my students throughout their lives.
