I teach 10th Grade Englsih and Creative Writing to college-bound sophmores in a High Impact/High Poverty school in North Carolina.
Writing is a fundamental skill in our society. Students headed for college need strong vocabulary skills, and the ability to think creatively. Practice in writing will develop the skills necessary to express their ideas effectively.
The use of a thesaurus will enable students to improve their writing and to learn to appreciate the nuances of language. The critical thinking and creative writing prompt books will inspire students to write creatively and to defend positions--skills that will enable them to compete once they get to college.
Students need to be able to write effectively, to choose words that mean what they intend, and to be able to express themselves creatively to achieve the impact and results they desire. The best writers, in college and in life, depend on a thesaurus and can write with both tone and sophistication.
