My Project

Many of my students have a limited personal library, but love reading and want books of their own. We have a large diverse classroom library, but my students deserve to have a diverse library of quality picture books at home, too.

This project is for copies of the book "You Have a Voice" by a kindergarten teacher and author, Vera Ahhiya.

In my classroom, I use diverse books to talk openly with my students about speaking up and speaking out about things we know are wrong. We learn about famous adult activists like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks but also kids like Ruby Bridges and Greta Thunberg. Part of kindergarten is learning how to communicate and it is important that students feel like they have a voice and the words to speak up - whether it's about taking a turn at the park or someone being treated unfairly. This book encourages children to speak up against things that seem wrong and work toward making the world a better place. This book is also filled with diverse representation so that my students will not only feel encouraged but also represented and valued. This project would provide my students with the opportunity to share this book with their families. They would also get a pair of special reading sunglasses to make reading the book extra special.
