You Guys Must Be WARPED!

My students need loom accessories, like bobbins, cotton, a heddle hook, etc., so they can begin weaving on the brand new table loom that we received, thanks to the generous support of our amazing donors!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you were to say to my fifth graders, "You guys must be warped!" they most likely would not take offense. You see, my students are weavers and they know that before you can begin weaving on a loom, you must warp the loom. We need some basic weaving accessories in order to warp our table loom!

My class of fifth graders and I have been together since September of 2010 when we began their fourth grade year.

On that first day of school, I taught them to weave on simple peg looms, and they took to weaving like ducks to water. It's been a wonderful journey we've been on together over this past year. We have integrated fiber arts into our entire curriculum and integrated the curriculum into our fiber arts activities. Over the past year, my students have learned to weave and to knit. This year, they are learning how to crochet and we are looking forward to dyeing with natural dyes, to felting, to learning to weave on our new 4-shaft table loom. Using natural fibers and plant dyes to create useful objects of beauty with their own hands is one of the few opportunities that they have to be so directly in touch with our natural world. Learning about the sources for these materials has inspired in them a deeper understanding of their responsibility for our fragile planet.

My Project

By having the accessories to get started weaving on our new table loom, which we have received thanks to the generosity of Donors Choose supporters, we can continue our learning journey that began on simple peg looms. Having these high quality weaving accessories will help foster a sense of respect for the tools that we use to build and to create the objects that are both functional and that bring pleasure to the eye and hand. Weaving can be both social and deeply meditative. In a busy, noisy world, sitting at a loom and quietly creating a beautiful length of woven fabric can be a centering experience, one that is too often missing in my students' daily lives. Beyond the personal benefits of weaving, however, the students will extend their own weaving experiences to learn about weaving, throughout history, in other cultures around the world. Weaving is an ancient art, and knowing about its place in our human history fosters an understanding of and respect for diverse cultures.

These high quality weaving accessories, together with the table loom that we will use them with, will be used not only by the students in my class this year.

They will be used by countless other students for years to come. As a classroom teacher who uses the fiber arts as an integral part of instruction, it is my goal as an educator to reach as many children as possible and to offer them the opportunity to connect with our natural world through the fiber arts.
